iotamaps - About us
iotamaps.com is a mapping website for radio amateurs, and others, with an interest in the Islands On The Air (IOTA) award scheme. The site is run by a radio amateur, Rob DM1CM, and is offered as-is, free of charge, to all.
The official Islands On The Air scheme is run by Islands On The Air (IOTA) Ltd in partnership with the Radio Society of Great Britain (RSGB) - the links page provides more information on the scheme.
This iotamaps.com site is independent from, and unaffiliated with, the official IOTA system, and is intended to enhance the IOTA "experience" by providing graphical and mapping tools to enable users to relate IOTA activations sites to the world map. In this way, users will be able to see at a glance where an activation is taking place in the world; it is also to be hoped that they will develop a better understanding of the conditions under which IOTA activations take place.
The original idea for an IOTA mapping site was conceived in the early 2000's, but interest was not great, so no real development took place. In the meantime, I developed an interest in the Summits On The Air (SOTA) award scheme for radio amateurs (which was itself originally modelled on the IOTA scheme) and, in 2011, started development of a mapping service for SOTA. That service, the SOTA Mapping Project (SMP) at www.sotamaps.org, quickly expanded to fill the niche which had, until then, barely been covered. The SMP is due to be discontinued soon, but as of November 2025 is still operating.
An earlier version of this site had been available online for a couple of years but, due to personal issues, was discontinued in 2017. That site's mapping service was based on the then free-of-charge Google Maps API but that API was converted in 2018 to a pay-as-you-go model. This present version of iotamaps.com uses the very versatile free-of-charge Leaflet mapping API to chart IOTA groups and islands in the map.
The iotamaps site is very much a work in progress, and I will post regular news updates of progress in the development of the site, so those users interested in such things will be able to follow the "journey of discovery"...
